This Privacy Policy describes how Shanks Golf (“we”, “our”, “the app”)
collects, uses, and protects information about you when you use our mobile
application.
Shanks Golf is operated by Juan Costa (costajuan@gmail.com).
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address
- Display name (or Apple-provided name if you use Sign in with Apple)
- Optional profile photo
- Optional golf handicap index (manually entered by you)
1.2 Golf Activity Data
When you use the app, we store:
- Scores you enter for rounds of golf
- Courses you play and tees you select
- Friends you add, leagues you join, groups you create
- Messages you send in in-app chat channels
- Informal wager records (see note below)
- Achievements you unlock
1.3 Device and Location Data
- Location: Only when you tap “Find courses near me” or a similar
feature. Location is used in real time to search for nearby golf courses
and is not stored on our servers. You can deny the location permission —
the app remains fully functional, just without proximity search.
- Push notification token: If you opt in to notifications, we store an
Apple-issued device token so we can deliver league and chat notifications.
1.4 What We Do NOT Collect
- Payment information — the app does not process payments of any kind.
- Financial account numbers, credit card numbers, or banking details.
- Biometric data.
- Health data.
- Advertising identifiers (we show no ads and run no tracking SDKs).
- Facial recognition data.
- Browsing history outside the app.
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account
- Save and sync your golf rounds across devices
- Calculate your handicap, statistics, and league standings
- Match you with friends and league members you explicitly connect with
- Send notifications you’ve subscribed to (round invites, league updates,
chat messages)
- Improve the app (aggregate, anonymized usage analysis only)
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any form of
automated decision-making that affects your legal rights.
3. Regarding the “Wager” Feature
Shanks Golf includes a social feature for tracking informal bets between
friends playing the same round. Important clarifications:
- No real money is processed through the app. The app does not integrate
with any payment provider.
- Wagers are just records — a note that “Player A bet Player B $5 on
this round.” The app computes who won based on your golf scores.
- Settlement happens outside the app, using services like Venmo, Zelle,
or cash, none of which the app has any connection to.
- Wagers can only be created between players in the same foursome.
This data is treated the same as any other golf activity data — stored
securely and shared only with the other players in the round.
We share your information only in these limited cases:
4.1 With Other Users
- Scores and statistics you record are visible to other players in rounds
you join and members of leagues or groups you’re part of.
- Your display name and profile photo are visible to your friends.
- You control who you friend, what leagues you join, and what you share.
4.2 With Service Providers
We use the following third-party services to operate the app:

Each provider is bound by their own privacy policies and processes data only
on our behalf.
4.3 Legal Compliance
We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or valid legal
process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of users or the
public.
4.4 What We Do NOT Do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not share your data with advertisers.
- We do not share your data with data brokers.
5. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete
your account:
- Your profile, rounds, and statistics are permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Data in shared contexts (leagues you participated in, scores in rounds
other players created) may be retained in anonymized form so that history
for the other players remains accurate. Your name will be replaced with
“Deleted User.”
- Backups are purged within 90 days.
6. Your Rights
Regardless of where you live, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of your data
- Correct — update inaccurate information
- Delete — delete your account and associated data
- Export — request your data in a portable format (JSON)
- Object — opt out of processing for specific purposes
To exercise any of these rights, email costajuan@gmail.com from the
email address associated with your account. We respond within 30 days.
6.1 For EU / UK Users (GDPR)
Our legal basis for processing is:
- Contract — to provide the app’s services to you
- Consent — for optional features like notifications and location
- Legitimate interest — for security, fraud prevention, and product
improvement
You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection
authority.
6.2 For California Residents (CCPA / CPRA)
You have the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the “sale” or
“sharing” of your personal information. We do not sell or share your data
with third parties for advertising purposes.
7. Security
We use industry-standard security practices:
- All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted via TLS 1.2+
- Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (via Supabase Auth)
- Database access is restricted using row-level security (RLS) policies
- Secrets and keys are stored in environment variables, never in source code
No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your
information.
8. Children’s Privacy
Shanks Golf is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly
collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has
created an account, please contact us at costajuan@gmail.com and we
will delete the account promptly.
9. International Users
The app operates globally, but data is stored on servers located in the
United States (via Supabase). By using the app, you consent to the transfer
and processing of your data in the United States.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be
communicated via the app or email. The “Last updated” date at the top of
this policy indicates when it was last revised.
